Pregnancy is a miracle. It is a normal physiological event in the life of a woman. Pregnancy is not a disease that needs to be cured or treated in any way. But, there is a need to understand this biological process and learn to listen to the special needs of the body during this phase of life so that the structural and hormonal changes and their effects can be appreciated.

However this wonderful and fulfilling experience does come with its share of discomforts, most of which are merely the natural manifestations of pregnancy, exaggerated to such an extent as to cause inconvenience and discomfort.

Nevertheless, it does not follow, that any of these ailments will necessarily appear. Most of these ailments can be corrected by the adoption of hygienic measures and careful analysis indicates that such ailments are more often due to unawareness or negligence than due to the existence of disorders. Here is a run down of the most common pregnancy ailments.

Backache is a common problem during pregnancy. It is caused by certain pregnancy hormones which soften the ligaments supporting the lower back bone and pelvic bone. Maintain good posture and do not bend too much. Avoid lifting heavy loads and do moderate exercises to keep backache away.

Women often complain of breathlessness during pregnancy, caused by the enlargement of the uterus. This problem usually reduces once the head of the baby gets fixed.

Constipation is a common ailment during pregnancy caused due to hormonal changes and iron supplements. To avoid it, increase your fluid intake and eat lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet.

Craving and aversions are common pointers during pregnancy. These may be for some particular kind of foods or odours.

Exhaustion is a natural phenomenon during pregnancy. Rest is what is desirable. A couple of hours in the afternoon and an extra hour or two in the night will be helpful.

Pregnancy makes you urinate friendly. There is an urge to pass urine a little too often. Go on. Visit as often as required. But keep your fluid intake high to avoid urinary infection.

Haemorrhoids generally appear during pregnancy due to increased pressure on the pelvic veins. Take it easy. Drink lots of water and include roughage in your diet. They will disappear on their own.

Headaches are quite frequent in pregnancy due to varied reasons, but are rarely serious. An occasional headache can be cured by taking an analgesic when the pain begins.

Leg cramps appear in pregnancy due to deficiency of calcium in the blood and lack of salt in the diet. Eat calcium rich foods and wear comfortable footwear.

Insomnia is a common complaint throughout pregnancy. A warm bath or a glass of milk before sleeping does wonders.

More than half of all pregnant women get heartburns, an uncomfortable sensation caused by the backward flow of stomach acids into the esophagus. Eat small meals. Drink lots of water and try to maintain the acid and alkali balance of the food you consume ideally at 20: 80.

Nausea is a common problem of about 70% of the expectant mothers. Eat small frequent meals, and avoid fatty and spicy foods.

Pigmentation is a very common symptom in pregnancy, but these patches usually fade away after childbirth. So don’t worry on this account.

All pregnant women get stretch marks due to the growing size of the baby. Eat sensibly and apply vitamin E oil on your stomach right from the very beginning of pregnancy. It just might help.

Swollen ankles and feet appear are common in pregnancy due to water retention. Watch your weight and don’t stand for too long. This will help you to avoid varicose veins too.

Pregnant women experience mood swings during pregnancy. Eat regularly and take help of supportive family members.

Snoring, nasal congestion and nosebleeds also are relatively common in pregnancy. Sleep on your side and control your weight.

An increase in vaginal discharge is more or less common in pregnancy as a result of noticeable increase in the turnover of vaginal lining cells. But if you have a vaginal discomfort, then visit your doctor.

Complementary therapies and holistic health care techniques also facilitate easy pregnancy and help fight these ailments.
