Handling Teething Tots
By Alice Noman
Teething is painless for some babies but for some its period of irritability, crying episodes and having disrupted sleep patterns at night. Check with your doctor if you're concerned about your baby's behaviour, and don't just put it down to 'teething'.
Teething can be uncomfortable but shouldn't make babies ill.
Here are some ways to help your baby at the time of teething:
• Give you baby extra tender loving care; provide him/her with extra comfort to relieve the pain.
• Rub baby’s gum with clean finger or a small, cool spoon or a wet gauze pad can be soothing.
• Sugar-free teething gel or powder can be easily available from chemist shop. Rub this gel or powder on baby’s gums. It must not be given to babies under four months old.
• Provide baby with teething ring but avoid tying it around a baby's neck, as it could get caught on something and strangle the baby.
• Don’t’ ever rub whiskey on baby’s gums.
• Giving sugar-free paracetamol might help if your baby has a fever. Check with your doctor if giving medicine is safe for child of your baby’s age.
• Your dentist or pediatrician may recommend a pacifier, teething ring or a special “numbing” salve for the gums.
• If your baby is over six months old, try offering them a sugar-free teething biscuit or unsweetened rusk.
