CAM generally refers to practices not typically used in mainstream medicine. CAM is distinguished by its holistic approach, which means that the patient is treated as a "whole" and not just the disease in isolation. It is a “high touch” methodology and not a modern “high tech” one. Complementary medicine is thought of as treatments used in addition to the conventional therapies for example massage, dietary supplements etc. Alternative medicine is generally thought of as being used instead of conventional methods. For example, this might mean seeing a homeopath or naturopath instead of your regular doctor.
