Thumb sucking is an innate instinct. Many children will stop sucking thumb or finger on their own by the age of one. But if they continue to suck their thumb after the age of five, parental intervention may be necessary. Pulling back baby’s thumb or finger out of mouth will not help but it will actually strengthen the thumb sucking habit.
